[THIS IS A SAMPLE POST. It will be polished up] The Seal Beach Historical Foundation is in talks with the Newspaper Archive company, the Sun and other local papers to digitize back issues and make them available for viewing online.
The plan is to make them available to anyone who purchases a one-year membership in the Foundation.
It’s not cheap to digitize and index the past issues, but we have organized a plan that will allow us to get maybe 10 years of these to start the process of shipping and digitizing in the next few weeks. The process takes about 5-6 months to complete. Foundation officials hope to get at least 10 years worth of publications started in the upcoming year.
Among the papers are the Sun and News-Enterprise, both currently published by Community Newspapers. Also included in the batch to be digitized are some papers that had brief histories.
Prior to 2006, the Sun/Journal, and the News-Enterprise both competed for audiences in the Seal Beach, Rossmoor, and Los Alamitos areas and each carried many articles of interest to each of those markets. For many years, the News-Enterprise printed a separate front page for the SB community.
Newspaper archive already has some issues of the Santa Ana/Orange County Register as part of their inventory which will also be available to Foundation members. An additional goal would be to locate and digitize all the old Seal Beach Post and Waves, which was the town newspaper from about 1916 into the late 1950s. The Historical Society purchased it from the original publishers around 2010, but the society administration did not make them available to anyone for years and the current whereabouts of the issues are unknown.
