TODAY IN SB HISTORY: Born Losers Take Over Main Street
September 15, 2025
On September 15, 1966 the streets of Seal Beach were suddenly shut down when “Hollywood” in the form of the low-budget action movie “Born Losers” staged some impromptu filming on the streets — without a permit. They had a permit to shoot scenes in the coffee shop where the Hangout is now located, but not to shut down the stret. While the movie holds some significance as the first of the successful Billy Jack franchise, “Born Losers” was a pretty bad movie whose only redeeming value is its view of the 100 block of Main Street in 1966 whjich provided a look at Condo’s Rock Shop, Raines Radio, the 1966 local Democratic office, the Seal beach Art center (formerly the Bayside Land Company building), and the legendary and indestructible Clancy’s and the Irisher.
Intrepid Seal Beach historian Mike Dobkins did a detailed post on the event on his “This Day in Seal Beach” blog. Check it out and all the other good stuff there.
